Sora

Sora is OpenAI's text-to-video generation model, announced in February 2024 and released to ChatGPT subscribers in December 2024. It attracted significant attention on announcement for producing video quality that was considerably more realistic and temporally consistent than what competing models had demonstrated publicly at the time.

The model generates video up to 20 seconds in length from text prompts, still images, or existing video footage. The output quality is strong by the standards of AI video generation: lighting, physics, and camera motion are rendered with a level of realism that earlier models struggled to achieve consistently. Complex scenes involving multiple moving objects, environmental details, and realistic material properties are handled more credibly than in many competing tools.

Sora is accessible to ChatGPT Plus subscribers at $20 per month with a limit of 50 priority videos per month and additional standard-quality generations. The Pro plan at $200 per month raises this to 500 priority videos with 5 concurrent generations, making it more practical for regular production use. Generations at standard quality have lower priority in the queue and may take longer to complete during peak usage.

The maximum 20-second clip length is a practical limitation for users who need longer video content. Runway and Pika support video extension, allowing shorter clips to be concatenated into longer sequences, while Sora's extension capabilities are still developing.
