Civitai has become the central hub of the open source image generation community, housing hundreds of thousands of community-created models, LoRAs, embeddings, and other resources for Stable Diffusion and FLUX image generation. For users who self-host AI image generation and want to extend their capabilities beyond base models, Civitai is an essential resource.

The platform functions similarly to GitHub for code, but for AI model files. Creators upload trained models, LoRAs (parameter-efficient fine-tuning files), textual inversions, and workflows, and the community rates and reviews them. Top models in popular categories — photorealistic portraits, anime art, architectural visualisation, product photography — are featured and downloaded by millions of users.

Model versioning, tags, and sample images make it practical to evaluate a model before downloading it. The sample images generated by the community show the model's capabilities across different prompts, which is more useful than a creator's curated showcase.

The on-platform image generation lets users generate images with any available model without self-hosting, using Civitai's GPU infrastructure via a credit system called Buzz. This provides access to the community model library without requiring local hardware.
